Premium stains and finishes for wood decks and fences.
Restore aged wood. Protect against Cincinnati’s weather cycles.
Your deck and fence are constantly exposed to Cincinnati’s harsh weather conditions. Winter freeze-thaw cycles, summer humidity, heavy rain, and intense UV exposure quickly break down unprotected wood—causing discoloration, cracking, rot, and structural deterioration.
Queen City Painting & Decorating specializes in professional deck and fence staining, painting, and restoration. We use premium Sherwin-Williams® exterior wood stains, prioritize meticulous surface preparation, and deliver durable finishes that protect your investment for years.
Founded by Will Patrick and David Purtell, two Cincinnati painters who understand our climate, we’ve restored and protected more than 200 decks and fences throughout the area.
Cincinnati’s outdoor wood surfaces face relentless environmental challenges. Understanding these challenges is crucial to protecting your deck and fence.
Freeze-Thaw Cycles
Winter temperatures often fluctuate above and below freezing. This constant expansion and contraction cracks wood fibers, leading to splitting and warping. Inferior finishes fail under these stresses. Professional stains are designed to flex with the wood and prevent long-term damage.
Moisture & Humidity
Cincinnati’s humid summers create persistent moisture exposure. Poorly applied or low-quality stains can trap moisture inside the wood, accelerating rot and mold growth. Professional-grade stains allow the wood to breathe while repelling surface water.
UV Exposure
Summer sun damages wood color and degrades finish protection. Wood left unprotected turns gray and becomes brittle. Quality stains include UV protection that preserves color and wood integrity.
Cold, Wet Ohio
Winters
Snow, ice, and prolonged damp conditions can destroy inadequately protected wood. Proper preparation and premium products are essential for long-term durability.
Older Wood & Restoration
Many Cincinnati homes have aged decks and fences that have gone years without proper maintenance. Restoring these requires specialized knowledge of wood condition assessment, pressure washing, sanding, and appropriate stain selection. This is exactly the expertise we bring to every project.
We stain decks with premium semi-transparent and solid-color stains that protect wood while showcasing its natural beauty. We can lighten, darken, or completely change your deck’s color.
For homeowners who prefer solid color coverage, we use durable exterior coatings designed for horizontal surfaces and heavy foot traffic.
Privacy, picket and decorative fences, we stain them beautifully. We can match existing colors or try something new.
We provide long-lasting painted finishes that resist peeling, cracking, and weather damage.
Fresh sealant protects raw wood and extends the life of existing stain. We seal decks to maximize protection and longevity.
Aged wood that’s grayed, weathered, or rotting requires restoration. We power wash, sand, repair damaged boards, and apply fresh stain or paint for a like-new appearance.

Step 1: Assessment & scheduling
We evaluate wood condition, discuss color options, and explain the scope of work. For restoration work, we assess rot, damage, and repair needs.
Step 2: Preparation
This is critical. We power wash to remove dirt, mold, and mildew. We sand to open wood pores and remove old, peeling stain. We repair damaged boards or structural issues. We fill gaps and cracks as needed.
Step 3: Drying & Priming
After pressure washing and sanding, wood needs 48–72 hours to dry properly. We monitor weather and don't proceed until conditions are right. For restoration, we may apply wood conditioner to ensure even stain absorption.
Step 4: Stain Application
We apply quality stain with proper technique—brushing and rolling to ensure even coverage and penetration. We typically apply one or two coats depending on the product and desired finish.
Step 5: Sealing (if applicable)
For added protection, we apply a quality sealer over the stain.
Step 6: Final Inspection & Cleanup
We inspect the entire deck or fence, address any touch-ups, and clean up completely. Your outdoor space is ready to enjoy.
